What are Escape Rooms?

Escape rooms were first popular in Asia and Western Europe, before exploding as a worldwide phenomenon. Inspired by the escape-the-room style video games, an escape room is a physical adventure game. Your team is locked in a room – decorated to replicate another location.

How It All Started

Escape rooms were first popular in Asia and Western Europe, before exploding as a worldwide phenomenon. Inspired by the escape-the-room style video games, an escape room is a physical adventure game. Your team is locked in a room – decorated to replicate another location. You have to solve a series of puzzles and riddles to complete a set of objectives and escape, all within the time limit. These puzzles or riddles are usually presented to you in a way that ties in with the theme of the room. Essentially, you and your friends get to take centre stage in an action thriller.

“You are a secret agent, assigned a new mission.”

“You are stuck in a police cell, accused of a crime you did not commit.”

“A biological virus has taken over the city and you must rendezvous with the final rescue team.”

“You are tasked with piecing together a murdered scientist’s ground-breaking research before you become a victim yourself.”

You get to engage with the story, to really be a part of the action and to confirm your suspicion that you would, in fact, have made a great spy. Teamwork is essential. Your logic and problem-solving ability will be tested. If you are successful, the satisfaction is immense.

If you are looking for a fun activity on a rainy day or a free evening, check out one of the many escape rooms that Toronto has to offer. All escape rooms are different and center on a unique theme, story line and challenge. Some popular rooms you will find in Toronto involve prison breakouts, haunted houses, murder mysteries and a zombie apocalypse. Rooms vary in difficulty so you will never be short of a challenge.

Try something new with your friends – most venues accommodate between four and twenty people per room. Always make sure you book in advance to avoid disappointment – especially if you have your heart set on a specific room as they do tend to book up quick!

Search for “escape” directly on the Bordie app and it will filter to all the Escape Rooms in Toronto. For the ones we’ve partnered with, you can book for a time-slot instantly!

Before You Go

Here are some quick tips:

  • Don’t stand still. Move around the room and inspect EVERYTHING. You might find a hidden clue.
  • Share the load. Sometimes you stare at a clue for so long, you can’t see what is right in front of you.
  • Listen to your host. Their introduction spiel might contain crucial information.

So, what are you waiting for? Go embrace the excitement and confusion. Plot your escape.

This is one of the best escape game establishments I have been to in the GTA. The Markham location is very popular and for good reason! Though it is on the pricier side close to $30 (you can get a small discount by checking into their page on Facebook however), the experience is worth every dollar. If you’ve tried other escape rooms, it will be quite obvious that the rooms here provide an overall better experience based on the level of detail that is put into the decorations/props, complexity of the puzzles, and incorporating some impressive technology.

There are multiple themed rooms with varying difficulty, but don’t be fooled! The low difficulty rooms are equally as fun and unique as the very difficult rooms. What I like about Omescape is most of their rooms do not just involve number or letter locks and involve multiple rooms for a more complex experience.

The low difficulty rooms are equally as fun and unique as the very difficult rooms.

Highly recommended as a team bonding experience for close friends and groups, Omescape also has a bubble tea shop and tables to play board games at an additional cost. It is a good place to have a full night of entertainment with your party after you are done escaping.

The only thing that docked 0.5 star for me was the slight difficulty in communicating with staff for hints. Relying on just the walkie talkie made it more time consuming to explain what kind of hint we needed (and sometimes they would start describing hints for another part of the room that we had not yet gone to). It would definitely be easier if they had video cameras in the room so the staff could more easily help as they could monitor your progress in the room, which I thought was a nice touch when I went to another escape room.

Overall, if you have never been to an escape room – Omescape is a great start. It will definitely be a fun experience that will get your party talking, regardless if you escape or not!
